Chilly Skedaddle

In past years, there wasn't as much consternation for the start of the Samaritan Skedaddle 5K race that starts and ends at 8th and Washington Streets in Michigan City.

But on Saturday, for the 13th annual Skedaddle, there was a little anxiety going into it with the Farmer's Market starting a week earlier than usual in the same parking lot next to the First Presbyterian Church as the Skedaddle organization. Tums out there was no reason to fret as the race went off without a hitch, and actually got in just before the rains came to the area. "I believe in the positive aspects of (having both events in the same lot) with good health in mind," said Ylva Haddadin, who is the board secretary of the Samaritan Counseling Centers. "These brought everyone together in one place to benefit Michigan City as a whole."

Taking first place overall was Ryan Kwiecinski of Chesterton with a time of 19:24.2, more than 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Parker DePalma of Michigan City. Kwiecinski finished third in last year's Skedaddle. The top female finisher was Katie House of South Bend. House finished fourth overall with 20:59.5 in the cold, windy conditions. It's nice to run when it's cool, but the wind was a little tough," House said, referring to the breeze out of the south which was in the face of the runners down the home stretch on Washington. Michele Carey of South Bend was the second female and ninth overall with 22:08.5. Sean McKeil was third overall, while Susan Reed of La Porte was the third woman (15th overall). The event was sponsored by Franciscan St. Anthony Health, which has been the case for "more than 10 years" according to Haddadin.
